The 'New Nigeria' Democrat Who Sues His Critics Atiku Abubakar has been called many things. Never once has he sued anyone for saying them. Bola Tinubu has attracted accusations that would make a lesser man reach for his lawyers on reflex. He is yet to. Instead, he even elevated a number of those who led those charges. Omoyele Sowore has built a political identity on being the loudest opposition voice in the room. Not one opponent has received a lawsuit from him for their political opinions. Then there is Peter Obi. The self-proclaimed you-don't-need-to-know-you-only-need-to-believe-me messiah of a mythical New Nigeria. One where whatever he says carries more veracity than whatever you know. The man his supporters christened the symbol of a new Nigeria, supposedly principled, cerebral in their imagination, and different. This best example of democratic ethos has either sued or threatened to sue Kenneth Okonkwo, People's Gazette, and a lawyer. And counting. These are not random targets. Kenneth Okonkwo was one of his most visible supporters. People's Gazette is a news platform doing what news platforms exist to do. The lawyer is a critic. What they share is this: they said things about Peter Obi that Peter Obi did not like. His response was not a press statement. Not a rebuttal. Not the dignified silence of a man secure in his record, like the Bola Tinubus and Atiku Abubakars. It was a lawsuit, or the threat of one. This is the truth democracy always delivers. It is not what a politician says about free speech at a rally, on his umpteenth X post about press freedom or during another choreographed interview. It is what he does when the press is free enough to say something he disagrees with. Note that this democrat is the first and only candidate to accuse his interviewer of having been hired, just because he asked a simple question any smart politician would have dunked. Instead of going for the dunk, he cast a false aspersion on the interviewer. Much like a basketball player dunking on the referee. Atiku has critics who have called him corrupt for two decades. He has not sued them. Tinubu's opponents have said worse. He has not sued them. Sowore's political enemies have tried to destroy him with words and with worse. He has not sued them for their words. Peter Obi, the candidate who ran on moral superiority, the politician whose movement declared him categorically different, reaches for legal instruments when politics gets uncomfortable. You do not need to verify this. The evidence is not hiding. It does not require investigation. We know when he came for People's Gazette, for reporting a true story. The Kenneth Okonkwo legal engagement is currently brewing. Whatever happened to that one against the lawyer? The question his supporters must now answer is a simple one: what exactly is he protecting? His reputation? Or his mythology? Because the man who sues critics is not the man they told themselves they were voting for. And the gap between that man and this behaviour is not a footnote. It is the chasm of their ignorance.
