In the last twelve months, Peter Obi has worn the colours of three political parties. Labour (escaped). ADC (escaped) NDC (trapped by the law). If the law had allowed it, he’d be making his way out of the NDC by now. FIFA caps a footballer at three clubs in a single season, and even then he may play official matches for only two. Obi has used up the full allowance, and the (election) season is not over. The indecision does not stop at party membership. It runs straight through his policy positions. In August, he told the Nigerian Bar Association that subsidy must go and that mismanaged proceeds were no excuse to bring it back. He came into September standing on that leg but it was already looking shaky as Atiku continued to enjoy the attention that came with that populist position. Many predicted he was going to shift. He has. To the surprise of nobody. By Monday in Sokoto, subsidy was coming back. Same man. Same subject. Different crowd. Different positions. One of Nigeria’s greatest blessings is the fact that it will never be burdened by a leader who doesn’t know what to do about anything except to move at the resonance of a mob or any crowd loud enough to titillate his impressionable mind.
