The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Orientation Agency (NOA), formalising the existing collaboration between both institutions. The National Commissioner/CEO of the NDPC, Dr Vincent Olatunji, appreciated the Director-General of the NOA, Dr Lanre Onilu, for his commitment to formalising the existing collaboration between the NDPC and NOA. He noted that the MoU provides a framework for joint initiatives, including capacity building and training for NOA personnel, coordinated public awareness campaigns, and the development of an action plan to expand data protection messaging across traditional and digital media. While noting that awareness remains one of the major mandates of the NDPC, Dr Olatunji emphasised the importance of leveraging NOA’s nationwide platform to deepen citizens’ understanding of their data protection rights and promote compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act), 2023. In his remarks, Dr Onilu commended the NDPC, under the leadership of Dr Olatunji, for its progress in strengthening Nigeria’s data protection ecosystem and congratulated Dr Olatunji on the commissioning of the Commission’s new headquarters. He acknowledged the significant work ahead and reaffirmed NOA’s commitment to working with the NDPC to broaden public awareness, strengthen compliance, and contribute to building a more privacy-conscious Nigeria. The objective of the MoU, signed by Dr Olatunji on behalf of the NDPC and Dr Onilu on behalf of the NOA, is to provide guidance on the applicability of the NDP Act to the mandate of the NOA and establish a framework for collaboration between both institutions to promote awareness of data protection and privacy across Nigeria, among other objectives. #Championingprivacyrights
